Principal Investigators

 

Tawfique Hasan is a Professor of NanoEngineering at the Cambridge Graphene Centre, Cambridge University Engineering Department and leads the group. He gained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2009. He also has an MEng. in Analog Microelectronics from University of New South Wales, Australia. Tawfique got his BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Islamic University of Technology, Bangladesh in 2001. He has held several research positions in the University since his PhD, including a Junior Research Fellowship in King's College, Cambridge, a National Science Foundation China Foreign Young Scientist Research Fellowship and a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship to work on graphene based flexible and printable devices. The latter contributed to the foundation of Cambridge Graphene Limited, which was acquired by Versarian Plc in 2017.
He is an Editor of Advanced Photonics.
Prof Hasan is a Fellow of Optica. He is also a Title C Fellow and a Director of Studies in Engineering in Churchill College, Cambridge.

 

Dr Osarenkhoe Ogbeide is a Junior Research Fellow at Churchill College and recipient of the William and Barbara Hawthorne Fellowship and Sydney Harvey Research Fellowship in Engineering. He has a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge and an Integrated Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Science from the University of Leicester, UK in 2016. During his PhD, he worked on machine intelligent printable gas sensors to address the limitations of traditional metal oxide gas sensors. His current research is on connected sensor systems for indoor pollution monitoring.
He is a Fellow of Churchill College.

Post Doctoral Researchers & Fellows

Prof Guolin Yun is working as a part-time Senior Research Associate in the group. Guolin received his B.S. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2017 from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC, China) and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2021 from the University of Wollongong (UOW, Australia). Guolin joined the NanoEngineering group as a Newton International Fellow in 2022, before joining the University of Science and Technology of China as a Professor. His research focus is on the liquid metal-filled hybrid conductive elastomers and their applications in flexible sensors and stretchable electronics.

 

Dr Tynee Bhowmick joined the NanoEngineering group as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2023. Tynee received her PhD in Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India, in 2022. During her PhD, her research focused on metal oxide thin film gas sensors. Tynee obtained her Master’s in Physics and, subsequently, Ceramic Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India, in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Her current research is focused on the design of theory-based porous quantum dot gas sensors.
Dr Fatemeh Khorramshahi joined the NanoEngineering group as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2025. She earned her M.Sc. in Photonics Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic and her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Florida. After completing her Ph.D., she worked as a Research Scientist at VTT for over three years, where she specialized in large-scale fabrication of 2D FETs integrated with RRAM and MEMS-based LWIR cameras. She has also conducted research at Columbia University, the University of Tehran, and the Fraunhofer Institute. Her research interests lie at the intersection of nanofabrication, emerging memory technologies, and 2D material-based electronic systems.

Dr Zhuo Chen is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Electronic Skins. He received his BEng degree with First Class Honours and MPhil degree in Electronic & Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, and his PhD in Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He co-founded a startup developing various environmental monitoring sensors and systems. During his PhD, he worked on printable and machine intelligent 0D/2D materials gas sensors arrays. His current research is focused on electronic skins for dexterous robots.
He is a By-Fellow of Churchill College.

Dr Doğa Doğanay joined the NanoEngineering Group as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2025. He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Middle East Technical University (METU), Türkiye. During his Ph.D., he focused on triboelectric nanogenerators and wearable electronics. In 2017, he co-founded a startup specializing in conductive inks, pastes, and adhesives for applications such as solar cells and printed electronics. He served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the company for eight years, leading the development of innovative materials and technologies until 2025. His current research is focused on electronic skins for dexterous robots.

Visitors

 

Prof Insung Bae joined the NanoEngineering group as a Visiting Scholar in 2025. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advanced Materials at Hannam University, South Korea, where he leads the Nanostructured Organic Materials Lab (NOML). He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Yonsei University. His research focuses on molecular nanostructures of organic materials for electronic and energy applications, including organic field-effect transistors, fuel cells, and batteries. In particular, he investigates the relationship between nanostructures and device performance.
He is a visiting fellow at Clare Hall College.

Prof. Yang Wang joined the NanoEngineering group as a Visiting Scholar in 2025. He is a Professor in the College of Information and Electrical Engineering at China Agricultural University, China, where he leads the Young Scientist Innovation Team for Green Energy & Smart Agri/Aquaculture. He received his Ph.D. in System Engineering from Technical University of Munich, Germany. His research focuses on agri/aquacultural environment intelligent monitoring, modelling and prediction, agricultural crop and fish growth modelling, and green energy applications in facility agri/aquaculture. In particular, he investigates the relationship between agricultural crop/fish growth and environment. 

He is a visiting By-Fellow of Churchill College.

Dr Xinyi Xu joined the NanoEngineering group as a Visiting Postdoc in 2025. She is a Postdoctoral Researcher in College of Integrated Circuit, Zhejiang University. She received her bachelor degree of Electrical and Information Engineering in Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2019 and PhD degree in Information and Communication Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2024. Her research focuses on silicon-based two-dimensional heterogeneous integrated smart image sensors, including neuromorphic device, in-sensor computing and computational imaging.

Ms Rabia Maryam joined the NanoEngineering group as a visiting PhD student in 2025. She is a PhD student at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy). She obtained her master's degree in physics from Comsats University Islamabad (Pakistan). Her scientific research interests are in nanomaterials, photocatalysis, antibacterial, and sensor-based devices. Her current research focuses on the functionalization of polymers by plasma etching and depositing graphene-based nanomaterials, exploring their applications for wearable devices.

PhD Students

 

Mr Jinrui Chen is a PhD student in the group. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the Institute for Advanced Study, Shenzhen University in 2020 and MPhil in Engineering from Cambridge University. During his Bachelors, he worked on the perovskite quantum dot-based memory devices. His current interests focus on the high bit precision printed memristor and its artificial synapse application.
He is a member of Christ's College.
Mr Zesheng Chen is a PhD student in the group. He received his Bachelor of Engineering in Automation from Zhejiang University in 2022 and an MPhil in Engineering from Cambridge University in 2023. As an undergraduate, he developed and optimized a PCB based digital microfluidic system in his sophomore year (2020). Later he began studying the motion patterns of bombyx mori using computer vision methods in his junior year (2021). His MPhil in the NanoEngineering group was on electrically tunable FPI arrays. His research focuses on tunable optoelectronic devices

Ms Abrar Alhazmi is a PhD student in the group. She received a master’s degree in electrical engineering (Solid State and Nanotechnology) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2022. Prior to this, she worked on field-effect transistors based on 2D materials. Her current research focuses on memristor devices, particularly those based on cutting-edge materials.

She is a member of Wolfson College.

Ms Zhiying Song is a PhD student in the group. She received her Bachelor degree in Optoelectronic information science and engineering from Beihang University in 2023. As an undergraduate, she worked on fluorescence enhancement method for NV center quantum sensing. Besides, she has also dabbled in the field of quantum entanglement source and 3D photonic crystal.
She is a member of Hughes Hall.

Mr George Psaltakis is a PhD student in the group. He earned his Integrated Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Hellenic Mediterranean University in 2024. His thesis, conducted under co-supervision with Johns Hopkins University, focused on memristors and memtransistors with organic materials, as well as artificial and spiking neural networks. His current research focuses on bio-inspired electronic devices, with an emphasis on biocompatible memristors. He is the recipient of the Cambridge Trust George and Marie Vergottis Scholarship and the Jesus Embericos Scholarship.
He is a member of Jesus College.

Mr Emrecan Tarakçı is a PhD student in the group. He received his BSc in Information Systems Engineering through the Istanbul Technical University - SUNY Binghamton Dual Diploma Programme, and his MSc in Informatics with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics from the Technical University of Munich. He earned his MRes in Photonic and Electronic Systems from University College London. His current research focuses on the design, fabrication, and optimisation of reconfigurable metasurfaces, integrating machine learning and inverse design methods to enable high-performance, compact spectral and polarisation sensing. He is part of the joint Cambridge/UCL Photonic and Electronic Systems CDT programme.
He is a member of St John’s College.

MPhil Students

Mr Madhurjot Sohi is an MPhil student in the group. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of British Columbia in 2025. Since 2023, he has worked as a Research and Development Engineer (Hardware) at Sanctuary AI, where one of his focus was on novel actuation methods for dexterous robotic hands. His current research explores the development of electronic skins for dexterous manipulation.
He is a member of Hughes Hall.

Technician

Mr Amir Nateghi joined the Nanoengineering group as a Process Technician in 2025. He holds an MSc in Biochemical Engineering from University College London (UCL). His academic and professional background spans bioprocessing, downstream purification, algal biotechnology and GMP-compliant manufacturing processes. Amir has contributed to both academic research and industrial projects across biotechnology, nanotechnology, and sustainable biomanufacturing. His early research focused on the use of cyanobacteria for the green synthesis of nanoparticles, exploring their potential applications in environmental and biomedical engineering. At UCL, he gained hands-on experience with advanced chromatographic techniques and the optimisation of biopharmaceutical production processes. Motivated by curiosity and a drive to explore emerging technologies, Amir joined the group to expand his expertise into composite materials and sensor development focused on electronic skins for dexterous robots.
