Tawfique Hasan
 

Principal Investigator

Tawfique Hasan is a Professor of NanoEngineering at the Cambridge Graphene Centre, Cambridge University Engineering Department and leads the group. He is also the Deputy Head of Electrical Engineering. He gained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2009. He also has an MEng. in Analog Microelectronics from University of New South Wales, Australia. Tawfique got his BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Islamic University of Technology, Bangladesh in 2001. He has held several research positions in the University since his PhD, including a Junior Research Fellowship in King's College, Cambridge, a National Science Foundation China Foreign Young Scientist Research Fellowship and a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship to work on graphene based flexible and printable devices. The latter contributed to the foundation of Cambridge Graphene Limited, which was acquired by Versarian Plc in 2017.
He is an Editorial Board Member of Advanced Photonics.
Prof Hasan is a Fellow of Optica. He is also a Title C Fellow and a Director of Studies in Engineering in Churchill College, Cambridge.

Post Doctoral Researchers & Fellows

Dr Guolin Yun joined the NanoEngineering group as a Newton International Fellow in 2022. Guolin received his B.S. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2017 from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC, China) and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2021 from the University of Wollongong (UOW, Australia). His research focus is on the liquid metal-filled hybrid conductive elastomers and their applications in flexible sensors and stretchable electronics.

Dr Tynee Bhowmick joined the NanoEngineering group as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2023. Tynee received her PhD in Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India, in 2022. During her PhD, her research focused on metal oxide thin film gas sensors. Tynee obtained her Master’s in Physics and, subsequently, Ceramic Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India, in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Her current research is focused on the design of theory-based porous quantum dot gas sensors.

Dr Osarenkhoe Ogbeide is a Junior Research Fellow at Churchill College and recipient of the William and Barbara Hawthorne Fellowship and Sydney Harvey Research Fellowship in Engineering. He has a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge and an Integrated Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Science from the University of Leicester, UK in 2016. During his PhD, he worked on machine intelligent printable gas sensors to address the limitations of traditional metal oxide gas sensors. His current research is on connected sensor system for indoor pollution monitoring

Visitors

Dr Sophia Bidinger completed her PhD in the NanoEngineering group and Bioelectronics Laboratory in 2023. Her doctoral research focused on the development of an aptamer-based transistor biosensing platform. She is now working to commercialize this work for applications in point-of-care biochemical and pharmaceutical monitoring.

Mr Xinyu Cai joined the NanoEngineering group as a visiting PhD student in 2023. He received his Bachelor's degree in Electronic Science and Technology from Hebei University of Technology in 2020 and now he is a PhD student in Zhejiang University. His current research focuses on biosensors and biosensing systems based on organic electrochemical transistors.

PhD Students

Mr Zhuo Chen is a PhD student in the group. He received his BEng degree with First Class Honours and MPhil degree in Electronic & Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. He has worked on graphene based flexible strain sensor arrays and metal oxide quantum dots based gas sensor arrays for wearable applications. He co-founded a startup developing various environmental monitoring sensors and systems. He joined the NanoEngineering group in 2020. His current research focuses on printable graphene aerogel with Murray structure for gas sensors.
He is a member of Churchill College.

Mr Jinrui Chen is a PhD student in the group. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the Institute for Advanced Study, Shenzhen University in 2020 and MPhil in Engineering from Cambridge University. During his Bachelors, he worked on the perovskite quantum dot-based memory devices. His current interests focus on the high bit precision printed memristor and its artificial synapse application.
He is a member of Christ's College.

Mr Binghan Zhou is a PhD student in the group. He received his Bachelor degree in Chemistry from Tsinghua University in 2020 and MPhil in Engineering from Cambridge University. He undertook undergraduate research on Murray materials based on biomass, and printable ionic thermoelectric materials made by graphene oxide-sodium alginate composite. His current research focuses on printable graphene aerogels with Murray structure for gas sensors.
He is a member of Girton College.

Mr Zesheng Chen is a PhD student in the group. He received his Bachelor of Engineering in Automation from Zhejiang University in 2022 and an MPhil in Engineering from Cambridge University in 2023. As an undergraduate, he developed and optimized a PCB based digital microfluidic system in his sophomore year (2020). Later he began studying the motion patterns of bombyx mori using computer vision methods in his junior year (2021). His MPhil in the NanoEngineering group was on electrically tunable FPI arrays. His research focuses on tunable optoelectronic devices

Ms Abrar Alhazmi is a PhD student in the group. She received a master’s degree in electrical engineering (Solid State and Nanotechnology) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2022. Prior to this, she worked on field-effect transistors based on 2D materials. Her current research focuses on memristor devices, particularly those based on cutting-edge materials.

Ms Zhiying Song is a PhD student in the group. She received her Bachelor degree in Optoelectronic information science and engineering from Beihang University in 2023. As an undergraduate, she worked on fluorescence enhancement method for NV center quantum sensing. Besides, she has also dabbled in the field of quantum entanglement source and 3D photonic crystal.
She is a member of Hughes Hall.

Undergraduate Project Students

Mr Jia Zheng Ong is an undergraduate project student within the group. He is currently a 4th year undergraduate and is specialising in Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering. His research project focuses on biodegradable inkjet printed 2D material based memristors, with the goal of achieving artificial synapse emulation.
He is a member of Trinity College.

Mr Charles Cambridge is an undergraduate project student within the group. He is currently a 4th year undergraduate and is specialising in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. His research project is focussed on the synthesis, design and gas sensing characteristics of Graphene-WO3 sensors.

He is a member of Churchill College.


Ms Ka Hei Cheng is an undergraduate project student within the group. She is currently a 4th year undergraduate and is specializing in Information and Computer Engineering. Her research project involves designing a miniature measurement chamber and signal processing circuitry for 3D-printed sensors and their arrays to maximize gas-sensing material interaction.
